The Townsville Telugu community recently came together in a colourful celebration of two significant festivals, Ugadi and Sri Rama Navami. These festivals mark the beginning of the Telugu New Year and the birth anniversary of Lord Rama, respectively. Organised by the Townsville Telugu Group, the event aimed to showcase the rich cultural traditions of the Telugu community and foster a sense of belonging among its members.

The lively event united Townsville’s Telugu community, featuring traditional music, dance, and food, offering attendees a glimpse into the rich cultural diversity within their local community. The celebrations were marked with great enthusiasm and joy, highlighting the importance of maintaining cultural traditions and connections.

One of the highlights of the event was the traditional food meticulously prepared by the ladies of the Telugu community. Dishes such as pulihora, chakkara pongali, bagara, sabudana wada, mango kheer, sambar, rasam, and more were crafted with great care and attention to detail. The delicious spread was appreciated by all who attended, with many praising the food and expressing their gratitude for the hard work involved in preparing it. Through their culinary efforts, the women of the Telugu community played a vital role in preserving and promoting their cultural traditions, ensuring the richness and diversity of Telugu culture are passed down from generation to generation.

The event also provided an opportunity for children to connect with their cultural roots. Young attendees had the chance to interact and play with other Telugu-speaking children, engaging in traditional games and activities. This exposure allowed them to learn about different cultures, practice their language skills, and immerse themselves in Telugu culture. The event fostered a sense of belonging and pride among the younger generation, as they connected with others in their community.

“The celebration of our festivals and traditions is crucial in preserving our heritage and passing it on to the next generation,” emphasised Mr. R V Rao Garu, a member of the Townsville Telugu Community Group. The event was a grand success, showcasing the rich and vibrant cultural heritage of the Telugu community, and demonstrating the spirit of unity and harmony that underpins the Townsville community.

The Townsville Telugu Ugadi and Sri Rama Navami celebrations of 2023 were not only a celebration of traditions but also a celebration of community spirit. Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers

We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.
