Victorians who are unwell with COVID on the day of the state election will still be required to vote at a polling booth.

Providing proof of infection, such as a registered positive rapid antigen test, will result in avoiding a fine.

Arrangements had previously been put in place to allow people with COVID to vote by telephone on election day, but these were dropped when isolation rules were lifted in Victoria.

The Victorian Electoral Commission is urging the public to vote early now polling booths are open, to avoid missing out on voting if they are unwell on election day.

Pfizer omicron specific booster available from next month

A new Omicron-specific vaccine will be available to Australian adults from next month.

The Pfizer dose will be the second bivalent vaccine to be rolled out in Australia.

The vaccine was approved after federal Health minister Mark Butler accepted advice from the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation.

Over four and half million doses of the vaccine are expected to arrive in the next fortnight.

It will be available as a third or fourth dose for eligible adults.

Protect yourself from mosquito borne disease

Due to the recent extreme rainfall, the possibility of increased mosquito breeding activity is high.

Health experts recommend several ways to protect against mosquito borne diseases this summer.

Japanese encephalitis is a mosquito borne disease recently detected in Queensland.

While it has not yet been found in Victoria, preventative measures are still important especially around stagnant water.

Avoiding mosquito bites is the key to preventing diseases carried by them, which can be done by covering up with long, loose-fitting clothing.

Using mosquito repellents on all exposed skin and limit outdoor activity if there is a high level of mosquito activity.

Reduce all areas of stagnant water around the house and garden.
