Nikhil Daftary | Entrepreneur
Nikhil Daftary came to Australia in 1995 as a student to study bachelor’s in Commerce (Accounting, Finance and Commercial Law) at Deakin University. He loved Australia the moment he landed here. “What’s not to love? Australia is a lovely country with a diverse multi-cultural background. I love the people and also the opportunity it gives to people who want to work hard and build something for themselves. More importantly I love the sports-centric nation that Australia is—cricket, tennis, footy, name any sport and Australians love it,” he says. He has also completed master’s in Finance and CPA.
Nikhil started working at a chartered accounting firm as a graduate accountant, but only lasted a year in that role as he “hated doing time-sheets”. He then moved on to a finance manager role at a small family-based manufacturing company.
“Since my first role, I have worked in various different industries—manufacturing, health, banking, consulting, mining and health tech. My roles have been from a finance manager to a divisional CFO. I have worked with Mayne Health (Symbion), ANZ Bank, Rio Tinto and Virtus Health (Melbourne IVF).”
Along with his full time job, Nikhil dabbled in a few entrepreneurial ventures from a business in furniture and carpets to another in commercial cleaning. “All that was a learning curve, and so in 2017 I left my full-time job. Maybe it was a midlife crisis or maybe it was because I was tired of corporate politics. I quit my job and decided to concentrate on my new venture Coral Healthcare,” he says.
“Along with dealing in medical consumables (probe covers), I am proud that I have managed to launch a brand—Moments Condoms—in a rather stigmatised category,” says Nikhil, whose company within the year, made it as a finalist to Australia Post’s ORIA Award for the Best New Online Retailer of the Year.
