With Biryani, the stage is set for a unique theatrical and culinary experience with actor Kali Srinivasan

In a unique theatrical and culinary experience combining storytelling, food and live music, international star from the Palme D’or Winning film Dheepan, Kali Srinivasan, cooks her family’s trademark Biryani recipe in front of the audience, sharing personal stories about food, love, identity and home.

Biryani, a co-production with Encounter, in partnership with St George’s Foundation of the Arts, is designed to immerse the audience in a multi-sensory experience—it’s dinner theatre as you have not experienced it before.

Told with honesty, emotion and humour, Biryani is designed for an audience of only 60 people who share a beautiful Indian meal together during the performance.

This show is directed by Jay Emmanuel, the newly appointed Artistic Director of St George’s Dance and Theatre as part of its second season and the Winter Arts Festival 2017. Jay was born in India, raised in Australia and is a graduate of the prestigious Jacques Lecoq School in Paris.

“Kali and have I wanted to work together since we both met on the stage of Theatre Du Soleil in India in 2015. She is a very generous actor, as incredibly charismatic on-stage as she is on-screen. We stayed in touch, looking for an opportunity to work together again, and in 2016 developed the concept for Biryani, adds Jay.

“We travelled to Tiruvannamalai to research the history of India’s famous dish and sample the different recipes,” says Jay.  Each Biryani recipe is unique and has an individual flavour that cannot be replicated because it is made totally by hand—from the grinding of spices to the actual stirring and cooking.

“In Indian culture, food is a way to communicate with others. I am interested in how food can communicate stories. At this moment in time, it is even more important to hear the stories of different cultures that reside in Australia. It is an exercise in understanding ourselves as a country,” adds Jay.

In this solo-performance Kali blends her own personal encounters and stories into the show. “It is our first collaboration with Kali, and her first time in Australia, and we are extremely excited to bring such a high-calibre performer to Perth,” says Jay.

Kali’s performance is accompanied by live music performed on classical Indian instruments by Tao Issaro, renowned percussionist/composer/music producer originally from Kerala in South India who now resides in Perth.
