2017: Your year on screen

Bollywood has a lot lined up for the year ahead, from tales of revenge to sagas in Rangoon

Actor Aamir Khan was recently quoted as telling a reporter that “Indian talent has the potential to entertain the world”. And with the line-up that Bollywood has planned for 217, it looks like the younger and older crop of actors are giving it their all to make sure it’s a year to remember especially on celluloid.

We’ve been watching the trailers and ‘first looks’ since 2015—a stubbled Shah Rukh Khan, sporting ‘surma’ in his eyes and looking lovelorn into the distance—and we hear that ‘Raees’ will finally see the light of day in January 2017. Set in 1980s Gujarat, SRK plays bootlegger Raees, whose business is highly challenged by a tough cop. The film also marks the Bollywood debut of Pakistani actress Mahira Khan.

After playing a paraplegic in Guzaarish (2010), Hrithik Roshan’s is going blind for ‘Kaabil’, where he also avenges his wife’s rape and murder. Directed by Sanjay Gupta, the movie will hit the theatres on January 26, alongside ‘Raees’. Some interesting family members are involved in this movie—while Rakesh Roshan is producing the project, his younger brother Rajesh is composing the music. Meanwhile, actor brothers Ronit and Rohit Roy will play the villains in the film.

Bollywood has been abuzz since Vishal Bhardwaj announced ‘Rangoon’ because the film stars Saif Ali Khan and Shahid Kapur (who have had quite a number of blow ups off screen, with Shahid being the ex-boyfriend of Saif’s current wife Kareena Kapoor). The two will be working together for the first time. Shahid plays a soldier, Kangna an actress, and Saif a film-maker. The story, which is set against the backdrop of World War II, seems to have a promising storyline, but we will know on 24 February when it releases.

After ‘Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania’, Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan are teaming up again for ‘Badrinath Ki Dulhania’, the second instalment of the franchise. The film is directed by Shashank Khaitan and the shooting is expected to wrap by the end of this year with the film set to hit the box office in March.

Actress Anushka Sharma is working overtime to get her second production ‘Phillauri’ out by March 017. Her first outing as a producer—‘NH10’—was a success at the box-office success her. While NH10 was a gritty thriller, with ‘Phillauri’ Anushka dabbles in the rom-com genre with Diljit Dosanjh cast opposite her. Touted to be a unique love story, one of the central characters is reportedly a ghost. More March madness.

The trio of Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and director Sanjay Leela Bhansali takes another shot at the box office, this time with Shahid Kapur also lending them his acting talent. Bhansali’s magnum opus (did we expect any less) ‘Padmavati’ stars Ranveer as Alauddin Khilji, Deepika as Rani Padmavati and Shahid as Raja Rawal Ratan Singh. The love triangle is a long way off from its release date of November 2017, but one hopes Bhansali’s financial troubles don’t set the date further off.

After the phenomenal success of ‘Ek Tha Tiger’, superstar Salman gets set to roar again with sequel ‘Tiger Zinda Hai’. The prequel featured Salman and Katrina Kaif in the lead and the duo will now reprise their roles in the second instalment. The film will be directed by Ali Abbas Zafar and is scheduled to release in Christmas 2017.

After the lukewarm response to her Kahaani 2, Vidya Balan hopes to make her presence felt at the box office with ‘Begum Jaan’, a historical drama directed by Srijit Mukherji and produced by Mahesh Bhatt. The film is the adaptation of the 2015 Bengali film Rajkahini and Vidya plays the lead role of a brothel’s madam during the partition of India in 1947.

Meanwhile, in Tamil cinema, it’s Vishal versus Vijay at the box office in January 2017 as both actors are readying for their films to be released. Vishal’s Kaththi Sandai will fight it out with Vijay’s 60th film Bairavaa, being directed by Bharathan. Kaththi Sandai (meaning sword fight) is written and directed by Suraj.
