A rebuilt intersection connecting Point Cook Road and Central Avenue in Altona Meadows has opened to traffic, replacing the former roundabout with traffic lights and a new freeway exit ramp connection.
The Victorian Government says the upgrade is designed to improve access between Altona Meadows, Seabrook, Point Cook and the Princes Freeway, while making the busy intersection safer for motorists and pedestrians.
Major construction is expected to be completed in December, around six months earlier than originally scheduled, according to the Carroll Labor Government. Landscaping and other finishing works will continue into early 2027.
Drivers will face a temporary change to access from 13 September, when the freeway exit ramp onto Central Avenue is scheduled to close until mid-November. During that period, motorists will be able to leave the Princes Freeway at Point Cook Road and use the new loop ramp to reach the surrounding suburbs.
The intersection forms part of a broader programme of road works across Melbourne’s west. Other projects highlighted by the government include the opening of Ison Road, improvements to the Werribee Main Road and Princes Freeway intersection, and additional lanes on Central Avenue.
Work is also underway at the Ballan Road intersection in Wyndham Vale, where another roundabout is being replaced with traffic lights and upgraded pedestrian crossings.
Victorian Roads and Road Safety Minister Paul Hamer said the project was intended to improve day-to-day travel for people using the intersection.
“Every Victorian deserves safe, reliable roads,” Hamer said. “That’s why we’ve upgraded this busy roundabout so locals can get to where they need to go.”
Point Cook MP Mathew Hilakari said the intersection was an important connection for surrounding communities.
“This is a key gateway into Altona Meadows, Seabrook and Point Cook, and these upgrades will make a real difference for the thousands of motorists who use it every day,” Hilakari said.
The government has also used the opening to criticise the Liberal-One Nation Coalition’s proposed $40 billion in spending cuts, arguing that reduced funding could affect future road upgrades. That claim is part of the government’s broader political argument over infrastructure spending and has not been independently established by the project announcement.
For motorists, the immediate focus will be on the new traffic-light-controlled intersection and the temporary freeway exit arrangements while the remaining works are completed.
