Parramatta residents will benefit from $1.37 million in funding for walking and cycling infrastructure under the latest round of the NSW Government’s Get NSW Active program.

The funding forms part of a $60 million state-wide allocation supporting projects designed to improve walking, cycling and local mobility across NSW.

In North Parramatta, $1,068,427 will fund a raised combined pedestrian and cyclist crossing at the intersection of MacArthur Street and Albert Street East.

The new crossing will connect with the existing pedestrian crossing on Brabyn Street, near Parramatta East Public School. The project will also include 190 metres of new shared path.

A further $300,000 has been allocated to a project in Harris Park to create a separated cycleway linking the M4 Cycleway with the Parramatta CBD. The work will address a missing connection for cyclists travelling between the two areas.

The Harris Park project will also include changes to parts of Station Street East and Marion Street, which will become northbound-only lanes. Ada Lane will receive a continuous footpath, while raised pedestrian crossings will be installed at selected intersections along Marion and Wigram streets.

Transport for NSW received 244 applications from 101 councils during this funding round, with 79 projects selected for support.

The successful projects include shared paths, active transport connections and so-called quietways, where road space is redesigned to create areas that are more suitable for walking and cycling.

Member for Parramatta Donna Davis said the program gave councils an opportunity to improve local infrastructure and make active travel easier for residents.

“The Get NSW Active program provides local councils with funding for projects that create safe, easy, and enjoyable walking and riding trips to promote health and wellbeing,” Davis said.

She said the latest funding would support improvements around Macarthur Street near Doyle Ground and along Station Street East in Harris Park.

The projects will add to existing walking and cycling infrastructure in Parramatta, with the aim of improving connections between residential areas, schools, public transport routes and the CBD.

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers

We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.

If you value thoughtful reporting that reflects Australia’s diversity, we invite you to contribute. Every donation helps us maintain the quality and consistency of our work.

Please consider making a contribution today.

Thank you for your support.
