Preview performances of A Beautiful Noise: The Neil Diamond Musical begin tonight at Melbourne’s Princess Theatre, marking the Australian debut of the Broadway production celebrating the life and music of one of the world’s best-selling recording artists.
The musical will officially open on Saturday before transferring to Sydney’s Lyric Theatre from 14 November. Producers have already released additional performances in both cities following strong ticket demand.
Created in collaboration with Neil Diamond, the production traces the singer-songwriter’s journey from his childhood in Brooklyn to international stardom, featuring many of the songs that defined his career, including Sweet Caroline, Cracklin’ Rosie and Forever in Blue Jeans.
Diamond has sold more than 140 million albums worldwide, earned induction into both the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and built a career that included sold-out concerts across the globe.
Broadway performer Will Swenson, who earned acclaim for the role in the United States, makes his Australian debut as the younger Neil Diamond. He is joined by Australian actor Terence Crawford as the older Diamond, alongside Ashleigh Rubenach, Monica Sayers, Alana Tranter, Tim Wright, Paul Hanlon and Hannah Fredericksen in the principal cast.
The production is directed by Tony Award winner Michael Mayer, with choreography by Olivier Award winner Steven Hoggett and a book by Anthony McCarten, whose screenwriting credits include Bohemian Rhapsody and The Two Popes.
For Australian audiences, the musical revisits a catalogue that has enjoyed enduring popularity over several decades.
Diamond toured Australia seven times with promoter Paul Dainty AO between 1976 and 2015, building a loyal following that has continued well beyond his years on stage. His 1972 live album Hot August Night became one of Australia’s biggest-selling records, spending 29 weeks at number one and remaining on the charts for 65 weeks.
The production arrives as jukebox musicals based on the lives of recording artists continue to attract strong audiences, following the success of shows such as Jersey Boys and Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.
Following its Melbourne season, A Beautiful Noise: The Neil Diamond Musical will open at Sydney Lyric on 14 November.
