Australia has named a 13-player squad for next month’s NRMA Insurance Test Series against Bangladesh, with captain Pat Cummins returning alongside Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon after injury layoffs.
The two-match series will begin in Darwin from 13 to 17 August before moving to Mackay from 22 to 26 August. Both Tests form part of the ICC World Test Championship.
The squad also marks the beginning of a new chapter following the retirement of veteran opener Usman Khawaja, creating an opening at the top of Australia’s batting order. South Australia’s Jake Weatherald has been included in the squad, while Beau Webster retains his place after making his mark during the previous home season.
Australia’s pace attack regains two experienced campaigners with the return of Cummins and Hazlewood, while Lyon’s availability restores one of the world’s most accomplished Test spinners. The trio have spent recent months recovering from injuries and working with Cricket Australia’s sports science and medical teams.
The squad features a familiar core, including Steve Smith, Travis Head, Marnus Labuschagne, Mitchell Starc, Alex Carey, Cameron Green and Josh Inglis, giving selectors a blend of experience and depth heading into the series.
Chair of Selectors George Bailey said the panel was pleased to welcome back three senior players after their rehabilitation.
“The NSP look forward to the return of Pat, Josh and Nathan. They have worked extremely hard, individually and with the SSSM teams, over the past few months to return from their respective injuries,” Bailey said.
Although only 13 players have been selected, Bailey confirmed additional players remain on standby should changes become necessary before the opening Test.
“While this is a 13-player squad, we have players prepared and available should any adjustments be required in the lead up to these matches,” he said.
Bailey added that Australia’s packed international schedule over the next year is expected to create opportunities for a wider group of players across all formats.
The Bangladesh series gives Australia an early opportunity to strengthen its position in the World Test Championship standings while continuing to manage the workloads of its leading fast bowlers ahead of another demanding international season.
