Parramatta has secured $195,000 in NSW Government funding to begin a trial aimed at establishing a 24-hour CBD, with plans to expand late-night trading, live entertainment and cultural activity in the city centre.

The funding, awarded through the NSW Government’s Special Entertainment Precinct (SEP) Kickstart Grant Program, will allow the City of Parramatta to develop and deliver a trial Special Entertainment Precinct in the heart of the CBD.

The grant will support planning work, acoustic guidelines and community engagement needed to establish a sustainable night-time precinct.

The proposed trial is expected to allow extended trading hours while encouraging live music and performances, later opening shops, food and drink venues, businesses, creative spaces and community facilities. The precinct will also provide incentives including reduced liquor licence fees and access to additional trading hours for music venues.

The project builds on Parramatta’s Late Night Trading Development Control Plan and the city’s long-term Parramatta 2050 vision, which aims to strengthen the CBD as a destination for entertainment, hospitality and cultural activities.

City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Martin Zaiter said the funding marked an important step in delivering the city’s long-term plans.

“This is a big win for Parramatta and a major step towards becoming a truly vibrant, 24-hour CBD for everyone to enjoy,” Cr Zaiter said.

“We’re already on the map for food, culture and entertainment, and this funding will help unlock even more opportunities for live music, entertainment and local businesses after dark.

“We’re focused on creating a City that people can enjoy day and night, supporting jobs, culture and a safe, exciting night-time economy.”

The trial will focus on the Parramatta CBD, bringing together local businesses, artists and community groups while supporting a managed night-time environment.

The initiative forms part of Round 2 of the NSW Government’s Special Entertainment Precinct Kickstart Grant Program, delivered through the Office of the 24-Hour Economy Commissioner.
