People living with type 2 diabetes in Melbourne’s south east will have the chance to access practical health information in Hindi at a free community event in Rowville later this month.

Diabetes Victoria is hosting the “Living Well with Diabetes” program on Saturday, 27 June at the Australian Indian Community Centre in Rowville. The event is designed for Hindi-speaking adults with type 2 diabetes, as well as their family members, carers and support people.

Running from 1pm to 3.30pm, the session will provide attendees with advice from bilingual health professionals on managing diabetes and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Organisers say the program aims to make diabetes education more accessible by offering information in participants’ preferred language and through culturally adapted resources.

Two presentations will be delivered in Hindi. Accredited Practising Dietitian Purva Gulyani will discuss healthy eating, while Credentialled Diabetes Educator Satinder Kaur will cover blood glucose monitoring. Participants will also have the opportunity to ask questions during a Q&A session.

The event comes as health organisations continue to look for ways to improve engagement with culturally and linguistically diverse communities, recognising that language barriers can affect access to health information and support services.

According to Diabetes Victoria, the program is intended to provide information, motivation and peer support for people managing type 2 diabetes. Attendees will also be able to connect with others facing similar health challenges.

Light refreshments will be served during the event.

The program is free to attend and community members do not need to be registered with the National Diabetes Services Scheme (NDSS) to participate. However, bookings are essential.

The event will be held at the Australian Indian Community Centre, 16-18 Kingsley Close, Rowville. Registrations can be made through the NDSS Events Portal or by calling the NDSS Helpline on 1800 637 700. Interpreter assistance is available through 131 450 for those who require it.

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers

We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.

If you value thoughtful reporting that reflects Australia’s diversity, we invite you to contribute. Every donation helps us maintain the quality and consistency of our work.

Please consider making a contribution today.

Thank you for your support.
