Indo Warehouse and Rashmeet Kaur explore myth and memory on new single “Chor”

Indo Warehouse and Rashmeet Kaur have released “Chor”, a new track that brings together South Asian folk influences and underground electronic production in a collaboration shaped by narrative and atmosphere.

Released globally on 15 May, the single sits within the wider creative world built by Indo Warehouse, the New York based collective founded by Kahani and Kunal Merchant. The project continues their focus on blending South Asian musical heritage with contemporary club sounds, while framing each release through original storytelling.

“Chor” carries a moody, restrained energy built on layered percussion and a steady electronic pulse. Its title, meaning thief in Punjabi and Hindi, draws from a narrative concept developed by the collective around a monsoon season mystery and a missing page from an ancient raag manuscript. That story shapes the track’s tone, where themes of longing and self-possession run side by side.

Rashmeet Kaur’s vocal delivery sits close to the centre of the track, carrying both softness and tension. Speaking about the release, she said: “Chor is a dark, emotionally layered song that feels like a whisper spreading through every street and alley. There’s a ‘chor’ out there, someone capable of stealing your heart. But beneath the vulnerability and intensity, the song also carries the quiet reminder not to lose yourself blindly in love, to give your heart to someone truly worthy of it. It lives in the contrast between surrender and self-protection.”

For Indo Warehouse, the collaboration reflects a developing approach to production that places equal weight on narrative and sound design. Kahani said: “With Rashmeet, it never felt like we were combining separate worlds. It felt like we were discovering a shared language together. Over the last few years, we’ve been thinking deeply about how to create music that feels connected to our heritage without feeling trapped by nostalgia.”

The track also marks the first time Kahani and Kunal Merchant have stepped forward as artists under the Indo Warehouse name, rather than solely as curators and label founders.

The wider concept behind “Chor” follows a fictional character named Sahar, who is said to climb the rooftops of a cloth-sellers’ lane during the monsoon to take a single page from a forbidden manuscript. Within the story, it is a page believed to be beyond the reach of a woman’s voice. She sings it alone, while the city speculates about the theft without understanding what has been taken.

The idea was first introduced live at IMS Ibiza during an Indo Warehouse set alongside Pete Tong, before its official release across streaming platforms.

Rashmeet Kaur, originally from Delhi and now based in Mumbai, has built a career spanning folk traditions and contemporary pop and electronic collaborations. Classically trained at Gandharva Mahavidyalaya and rooted in Gurmat Sangeet from an early age, she has moved across styles with releases that include “Jadi Buti” with Major Lazer, Diplo and Nucleya, “Bajre Da Sitta”, and “Nadiyon Paar”, which has accumulated hundreds of millions of streams. Her 2024 album “Kaura” further expanded her recorded work.

Indo Warehouse, founded in 2022, continues to position itself within a growing South Asian electronic music movement, combining deep house and melodic techno with regional instrumentation. The collective has released dozens of tracks from a wide range of artists, building a catalogue that sits across club culture and heritage driven storytelling.

With “Chor”, both collaborators step into a shared creative space that leans on narrative structure as much as sound, setting out a release that moves between folklore, electronic production and contemporary South Asian musical identity.
