Abhirup Vijay Gunakar, a computer science graduate from Lucknow, was among the student speakers selected for Arizona State University’s spring 2026 commencement ceremonies, addressing graduates at a time when the university continues to expand its international reach and industry links.
Gunakar completed a master’s degree in computer science through the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering and was chosen as a convocation speaker during ceremonies held on 11 May at Desert Financial Arena. More than 22,000 students graduated from ASU this spring.
His selection highlighted a mix of academic achievement, research work and student leadership developed across both India and the United States. During his time at ASU, Gunakar led the Google Developer Student Club, helping coordinate programmes and events for a student community of more than 3,000 members.
His work in Linux kernel security also gained international attention, including a research presentation in Europe, while fellowships in Germany added to his experience working across different academic and technical environments.
Speaking about the role of technology in society, Gunakar said computer science should remain grounded in human values, pointing to the need for ethical thinking and collaboration in the development of future technologies. Alongside research and leadership activities, he also worked on community outreach projects aimed at helping younger students better understand cybersecurity concepts.
Arizona State University has continued to position itself as a major destination for international students, particularly in engineering and technology disciplines. University figures show 2,947 international students graduated this spring, representing more than 150 countries.
Many graduates are moving into sectors facing growing demand for skilled workers, including engineering, health care, semiconductors, education and defence. Universities across the United States have increasingly focused on preparing graduates for industries shaped by rapid advances in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and advanced manufacturing.
This year’s commencement celebrations also featured actor and environmental campaigner Harrison Ford, who addressed graduates during undergraduate ceremonies and encouraged students to use their skills and influence to contribute positively to the world.

Support Independent Community Journalism
Dear Reader,The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.
We operate independently.
Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.
When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers
We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.
