The Brisbane Indian community experienced an enriching spiritual gathering as Samavedham Shanmukha Sarma delivered discourses on the significance of “Nama Mahima” over two days, held on the 12th and 13th.

Sarma is a well-known Indian spiritual teacher, scholar and orator recognised for his discourses on Hindu scriptures, including the Puranas, Vedas and Itihasas. He serves as the editor of Rushipeetham magazine, is a devotional lyricist associated with Sivapadam, and founded the Rushividyabhyasam initiative, which focuses on preserving and promoting Indian cultural and spiritual traditions. More information about his work can be found at Rushipeetham.

The event drew a large and engaged audience, with attendees responding warmly to the pravachanams that explored the value of chanting the divine name in daily life. Through storytelling, scriptural references and practical reflections, Sarma highlighted how Nama Smarana can support a sense of calm, clarity and spiritual focus.

The programme was organised by Challa Prasad and coordinated by Sree Krishna Venuthurupalli along with Suresh Ajjarapu. Their efforts helped ensure the event ran smoothly and created a welcoming setting for participants.

Across both days, families, young people and older attendees took part, reflecting steady interest in spiritual learning within the local community. The sessions connected traditional teachings with present-day concerns, which appeared to resonate with younger attendees looking for balance in a busy routine.

The programme closed with a shared meal, giving participants time to reflect and connect. Organisers thanked the community for its support and participation, noting the strong turnout and engagement across both days.

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers

We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.

If you value thoughtful reporting that reflects Australia’s diversity, we invite you to contribute. Every donation helps us maintain the quality and consistency of our work.

Please consider making a contribution today.

Thank you for your support.
