is set to trial a Special Entertainment Precinct in its central business district, part of a broader state push to strengthen nightlife and extend activity beyond standard trading hours.

The proposed precinct would allow venues to stay open later, support live music and performances, and offer incentives such as reduced liquor licence fees for participating businesses. The move reflects ongoing efforts across New South Wales to revive night-time economies following years of restrictions and changing consumer habits.

According to City of Parramatta, the trial area will stretch across a busy section of the CBD, bounded by Parramatta Westfield, Parramatta Station and the well-known Eat Street dining strip, extending from O’Connell Street through to Charles Street. The location places the precinct at the centre of the city’s existing retail and hospitality activity.

Lord Mayor Martin Zaiter said the initiative builds on Parramatta’s current reputation as a food and cultural destination, with a focus on encouraging more activity after dark. He pointed to the potential for longer trading hours to draw more visitors and support local businesses.

The council has framed the precinct as part of a wider ambition to develop a 24-hour city, with benefits expected to include increased foot traffic, support for hospitality jobs and a more active public space in the evening. Supporters argue that designated entertainment zones can provide clarity for venues while managing noise and community expectations through structured planning.

At the same time, similar initiatives in other parts of Australia have prompted mixed responses. While business groups often welcome the flexibility and potential revenue boost, some residents have raised concerns about noise, safety and the impact on local amenity. How these issues are addressed in Parramatta is likely to shape the trial’s reception.

The council will now establish an interim Precinct Working Group to guide the process and prepare a formal planning proposal later this year. The group is expected to work through operational details, including compliance requirements and how venues can opt into the scheme.

The trial places Parramatta among a growing number of urban centres testing new approaches to nightlife management, balancing economic activity with community expectations as cities look to extend their appeal beyond daytime hours.
