British Airways will begin daily flights between Melbourne and London from January 2027, via Kuala Lumpur, offering faster connections for Victorian exporters, businesses and tourists. The announcement, made by Industry and Advanced Manufacturing Minister Colin Brooks, marks a notable expansion in international aviation for the state.
The UK is Victoria’s fourth largest source of international visitors and its 12th largest air freight export market, valued at $376 million. Officials say the new service will help local businesses reach key markets more efficiently while supporting tourism growth.
“These flights strengthen our ties with a global economic powerhouse and unlock new opportunities for trade, investment and local jobs,” Brooks said. “They put Victoria in a stronger global position and make it easier for more visitors to experience everything our state has to offer.”
Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events Steve Dimopoulos highlighted the benefits for the tourism sector. “These flights from London will make it easier for more visitors to explore Victoria, supporting tourism businesses and jobs right across the state,” he said.
British Airways Chief Planning and Strategy Officer Neil Chernoff said the new route represents a major investment in the airline’s network. “We have a long history of connecting Britain and Australia, and we’re excited to be returning to this great city. We’re also increasing services across several high-demand routes, adding even more options and choice for our customers,” Chernoff said.
Melbourne Airport CEO Lorie Argus emphasised the airport’s role in connecting Europe and Australia. “With the largest choice of airlines flying to the UK and Europe, 24-hour operations and the shortest minimum connection time of any Australian airport, Melbourne Airport is now the clear choice for Europeans heading to Australia or Australians travelling abroad,” she said.
The Allan Labor Government has actively supported international aviation growth, backing new and expanded services from airlines including Delta, Hong Kong Airlines and Shenzhen Airlines. The 2025 Melbourne Airport Economic report found a single daily international service contributes an estimated $190 million to Victoria’s economy and supports around 2,000 full-time jobs.
The addition of British Airways’ daily Melbourne–London flights is expected to further reinforce Victoria’s position as a hub for trade, business, education and international visitors.
