Sydney-based Tamil musician Sathyan Ilanko has taken a major step forward in his music career with the release of his debut solo single NEERODA, marking his transition from behind-the-scenes lyricist to independent artist.
Released on 23 January, NEERODA is now streaming on YouTube, Spotify, Amazon Music, Deezer and Tidal. The track is a fully self-driven project, with Ilanko composing the music, writing the lyrics, singing, and performing in the music video—a milestone that highlights his growing creative range.
“Finally it’s out. Hundreds and thousands of people’s dreams and hard work have come true,” Ilanko’s mother Subashini told The Indian Sun. She also revealed that her son has written a song for legendary music director A R Rahman for the Tamil film Moonwalk, which is set for release in May. The song is titled Jiger.
“The album for the movie was released on 4 January, and Sathyan travelled to India for the audio launch,” she said.
The releases follows a breakthrough year for the young artist. In 2024, Ilanko shot to international attention with Aasa Kooda, a Tamil song that became a global hit after its release in India on 13 June. Sung and composed by siblings Sai Abhyankkar and Sai Smriti, the song featured Ilanko’s lyrics and went on to rack up millions of views and widespread social media traction, particularly among Tamil audiences worldwide.

While Aasa Kooda introduced Ilanko to a global audience, his journey in music began much earlier. In 2019, at just 16, he made his playback singing debut in the Tamil film Aduththa Sattai, performing two songs—an early sign of the cross-continental career that was to follow.
Currently in India completing several ongoing projects, Ilanko is expected to return to Australia in February. With NEERODA marking his arrival as a solo artist and high-profile film collaborations underway, the Sydney-raised musician is fast emerging as a distinctive voice connecting the Tamil diaspora with India’s mainstream music industry.
