Major construction has begun on the Ballan Road Intersection Upgrade in Wyndham Vale, with crews moving in this week to replace the long-criticised roundabout at Ballan Road, Greens Road and McGrath Road North with a new signalised intersection.
The Victorian Government says the project is aimed at easing congestion and improving safety for drivers, public transport users, pedestrians and cyclists along one of the area’s busiest east to west routes. The works will introduce traffic lights, additional lanes and new pedestrian facilities as part of a broader upgrade of the junction.
Minister for Transport Infrastructure Gabrielle Williams said the construction program had been planned to manage disruption while keeping vehicles moving. “Major works are underway on the Ballan Road Intersection Upgrade, with the construction schedule carefully designed to keep traffic moving along this busy east to west route wherever possible,” she said.
Initial activity will see the existing roundabout demolished and concrete safety barriers installed to separate traffic from the work zone. A temporary roundabout and pavement will be put in place so vehicles can continue to pass through the area while work continues behind the barriers.
As the project moves into its next phases, McGrath Road North will be closed at Ballan Road until late 2026. Signed detours via Ballan and Bolton roads will be in place, and drivers are being advised to allow an extra 20 minutes for their journeys. Construction will continue on the northern side of Ballan Road until late 2026, before shifting south later in the year.
Ms Williams said the staging of the project reflected the road’s importance to the local community and freight movements. “We know how important Ballan Road is for locals and freight, which is why we are staging works to minimise disruption while delivering a safer and more efficient intersection for the long term,” she said.
Access to nearby shops will remain open throughout construction, although traffic movements will change as works progress. From early February, right turns from Ballan Road into shop precincts on both sides of the road will be removed to support safety and traffic flow.
Pedestrian access is also being adjusted. A temporary signalised crossing will be installed near the medical centre from Monday, 2 February, while the existing school crossing north of the roundabout will be relocated further away from the construction area.
Public transport users will also see changes, with two stops on bus route 190 closed for the duration of the works. Passengers are being directed to alternative stops on Ballan Road near Buckingham Drive or on Bolton Road.
Local MP John Lister said the upgrade addressed a long-standing concern for residents. “Just like other locals I know how frustrating this roundabout is, so Labor is delivering a safer signalised intersection to improve traffic flow and make it safer for people travelling to schools, work and essential services,” he said.
The project forms part of ongoing road upgrades in Melbourne’s west, as population growth continues to place pressure on key transport corridors.
