Thousands of Victorian children are preparing to pick up their pens as 19 new schools open across some of the state’s fastest-growing communities.

In Melbourne’s west, Truganina’s new Mindalk Primary School will welcome up to 575 students when doors open for Term 1 in just a few weeks. Acting Premier and Minister for Education Ben Carroll visited the school today ahead of its official opening.

“We’re opening 19 new schools in 2026, ensuring more families can access a great local school close to home. These new schools reflect ongoing investment in making sure every child, regardless of postcode, can rely on a high-quality public education,” Carroll said.

The purpose-built campus includes an administration and library building, three learning neighbourhoods with modern classrooms, and a community hub offering spaces for music and art, hard courts and a sports field.

Mindalk Primary School has been designed as an inclusion school, with purpose-built facilities such as sensory areas, accessible play spaces and wider corridors to support students with a disability.

The school will be led by foundation principal Blayne Wallis, who brings decades of experience in teaching and school leadership.

Families in the area will also benefit from a new kindergarten located next to the school, delivered in partnership with Melton City Council. The centre will offer 99 places, helping parents avoid double drop-offs while giving children a strong start to their education.

Mindalk Primary School is among 19 new schools set to welcome students in Term 1, 2026. As of December, more than 2,650 students were already enrolled across the new schools, including more than 750 prep students, highlighting continued demand in growing suburbs.

Other schools opening in 2026 include Birranga College in Clyde North, Biyala Primary School in Armstrong Creek, Kolorer College in Cobblebank, Narrarrang Primary School in Port Melbourne and Marra School in Kalkallo.

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers

We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.

If you value thoughtful reporting that reflects Australia’s diversity, we invite you to contribute. Every donation helps us maintain the quality and consistency of our work.

Please consider making a contribution today.

Thank you for your support.
