The South Australian Government has doubled its investment in education programs addressing antisemitism, committing $500,000 over the next three years to expand the Adelaide Holocaust Museum and Andrew Steiner Education Centre’s (AHMSEC) initiatives for children and young people. The move follows the tragic terror attack at Bondi Beach and reflects growing concerns over antisemitism and other forms of hate.

The Adelaide Holocaust Museum is the state’s only public institution solely dedicated to Holocaust education and combating antisemitism. Its programs, recognised as an essential part of the South Australian education system, promote understanding, empathy, and responsible citizenship. The additional funding will support the development of new educational content targeting upper primary students, extend programs to younger age groups, and increase access for regional and disadvantaged communities through in-person and online learning.

A senior educator will be appointed to ensure the ongoing improvement of programs, and partnerships with institutions such as Flinders University and the Children’s Rights Centre of South Australia will be strengthened to foster research and support moral and citizenship education. Each year, AHMSEC reaches around 3,000 students across 45 schools, including regional areas, and provides professional learning for over 200 teachers to broaden the impact of Holocaust education.

Premier Peter Malinauskas emphasised the importance of confronting antisemitism through education. “Antisemitism has no place in South Australia and education is one of the most powerful tools we have to confront this hatred,” he said. “The Adelaide Holocaust Museum and Andrew Steiner Education Centre does vital work educating young people about the Holocaust, antisemitism and the consequences of hate, and this expanded funding will allow that work to reach more students than ever before.”

Education Minister Blair Boyer said the events at Bondi Beach highlighted the need for greater understanding of Jewish history. “It is essential we teach our children and young people about what the Jewish community has endured in the past to better support the Jewish people now and into the future,” he said. The expanded funding, he added, will allow Holocaust and antisemitism education to reach even more students across South Australia.

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers

We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.
