The Queensland Government has committed $400,000 to support major Christmas charity appeals, directing funds to organisations that provide assistance to people facing hardship during the holiday period.

St Vincent de Paul Society Queensland, The Salvation Army, The Smith Family and UnitingCare Community will each receive $100,000. The funding is intended to help charities meet increased demand for support over Christmas, a time when many families and individuals experience added financial and social pressure.

The donations will be used for a range of practical services, including accommodation support, food hampers and gifts for children. For the organisations involved, these appeals form a core part of their annual efforts to reach people who might otherwise go without during the festive season.

Premier David Crisafulli said the funding was aimed at ensuring support services remain available when they are most needed. He said the charities play an essential role in providing immediate help such as food and shelter, while also offering longer-term assistance that can carry people beyond the Christmas period.

Demand for charitable support has remained high across Queensland, with community organisations reporting continued pressure on housing services, emergency relief and family assistance programs. While government funding forms part of the safety net, charities rely heavily on donations and volunteer efforts to maintain their services, particularly during peak periods like Christmas.

Representatives from the charity sector have previously noted that predictable funding helps them plan their response to seasonal demand, allowing resources to be directed where they are most needed. Support at this time of year can help reduce stress for families and individuals who are already managing rising living costs and housing insecurity.

The government’s contribution sits alongside broader public fundraising campaigns run by each organisation. These campaigns often attract additional donations from businesses and individuals, amplifying the overall impact of the funding.

As the Christmas period approaches, charities across the state continue to prepare for increased requests for help. The additional funding is expected to support frontline services and provide some relief for those facing a difficult end to the year, while acknowledging the ongoing work of staff and volunteers who support Queenslanders throughout the year.

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers

We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.

If you value thoughtful reporting that reflects Australia’s diversity, we invite you to contribute. Every donation helps us maintain the quality and consistency of our work.
