India’s largest airline, IndiGo, has begun daily direct flights between Mumbai and London’s Heathrow Airport, operating a dual-class Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner featuring Economy and the carrier’s business-oriented “IndiGoStretch” cabin. The move marks a clear step in its push to extend beyond domestic air travel and engage the global market.

The new route links two major financial hubs—Mumbai and London—and offers travelers from India a direct path to the United Kingdom, while giving UK passengers access to IndiGo’s domestic network of more than 90 destinations across India. The outbound sector departs Mumbai at 14:45 and arrives at Heathrow at 19:20, with the return leaving London at 21:30 and landing in Mumbai at 11:45 the following day.

Chief Executive Officer Pieter Elbers said: “We are delighted to announce the launch of direct connectivity between Mumbai and London—two vibrant, global financial hubs with deep cultural and economic ties. This route is not just a new destination for us, it’s a bridge between cultures, businesses, and families. This also marks a defining moment in IndiGo’s journey towards becoming a truly global airline and reaffirms our commitment to connecting India to the world through efficient, consistent, and reliable service. With this launch, we aim to make travel between India and the UK more seamless, accessible and affordable for our customers.”

In-flight amenities on this long-haul offering include complimentary hot meals and beverages in both cabins, alcoholic drinks for purchase in Economy and complimentary for IndiGoStretch passengers, seat-back entertainment systems and enhanced comfort features. The airline says the service complements its recent launches of routes to Copenhagen, Amsterdam and Manchester.

From a traveller’s perspective the introduction of this route could change the cost and convenience calculus for journeys between India and the UK. One-way economy fares start at approximately INR 19,846 (around AUD 357) for select mid-November dates, while business-class fares begin around INR 54,999 (around AUD 990). These prices exclude taxes, fees and add-ons and are subject to variation.

For Australia-based travellers, the airline’s Mumbai connection offers an interesting pathway: for example, flying Perth to Mumbai on IndiGo’s network then onwards to London.
