Moira Deeming, Liberal MP for Western Metropolitan Region, is set to host a community safety forum in Melbourne’s west, joined by Opposition Leader Brad Battin and former homicide detective Charlie Bezzina. The event, to be held at the Taylors Lakes Hotel on 2 October, has been billed as an opportunity for residents to share their views on crime and policing.

The forum is free to attend, with registrations managed through an online booking system. It will begin at 6.30pm for a 7pm start and is aimed at giving local people the chance to contribute ideas on how to improve safety across Victoria.

Deeming has invited residents to share their views and contribute ideas on improving safety in Victoria, with the forum featuring Charlie Bezzina, a former homicide detective with decades of investigative experience.

For Deeming, the forum builds on her recent focus on law and order policies, including proposals to give police and Protective Services Officers greater powers in public spaces and initiatives targeting youth crime. Brad Battin’s attendance underlines the opposition’s effort to place community safety at the centre of its engagement with voters in Melbourne’s outer suburbs.

The event follows a series of political activities by the Liberal Party in the west, where they are seeking to regain ground from Labor. Deeming has repeatedly argued that communities in the region have been left behind on issues of safety and infrastructure, and she has called for more direct engagement with residents.

With crime and public safety continuing to feature prominently in local debate, the Taylors Lakes forum will provide a stage for community voices alongside political leaders and experts. Whether it translates into momentum for the Liberals in a traditionally Labor-leaning area will depend on how voters respond in the months ahead.

We believe community journalism is very important for a multicultural country like Australia. We’re not able to do everything, but we aim for some of the most interesting stories and journalism of quality. We call upon readers like you to support us and make any contribution.
