Victoria has secured the latest chapter in one of Hollywood’s most successful horror franchises, with Insidious 6 now filming across Melbourne and set to generate a $29 million boost for the state’s economy.
Minister for Creative Industries Colin Brooks confirmed that the production will create more than 500 local jobs. “Created by Victorians, Insidious is a franchise that has captured the imagination and attention of audiences around the world and is testament to the depth of creative talent we export to the world,” he said. “Productions like this are big business for our state, they create jobs for Victorians and boost local businesses.”
The franchise, created by Leigh Whannell and James Wan, has grossed more than $740 million globally. Melbourne’s distinctive architecture and streetscapes are now taking centre stage, with filming underway in Camberwell, Essendon, Kensington and at Docklands Studios Melbourne.
Insidious 6 joins a growing list of productions made in Victoria, including Stake Out, Her Aussie Romance, The Dispatcher, The Mongoose, Play Dead, Gnomes, and Goolagong. The film is being produced by Sony Pictures and Blumhouse, with Jason Blum, Oren Peli, James Wan and Leigh Whannell leading the team. Executive producers include Ryan Turek, Steven Schneider, Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, and David Leslie Johnson. It is directed by Jacob Chase, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Johnson. The cast features Lin Shaye, Amelia Eve, Brandon Perea, and Victorian actor Laura Gordon.
VicScreen CEO Caroline Pitcher said the decision to film in Melbourne reflected the strength of the state’s screen industry. “We’re thrilled to welcome the Insidious team to Victoria to make another heart-pounding film. It demonstrates the confidence that Sony and Blumhouse has in our highly skilled crews, world-class facilities, and striking locations,” she said. “The Insidious series was created by Victorian talent and we’re proud that they’ve come back here to generate employment and skills development opportunities for Victorian screen workers and businesses.”
Blumhouse founder Jason Blum added: “Melbourne is an incredible city for filmmaking — its mix of world-class crews, cutting-edge facilities, and rich creative culture made it the perfect home for our next Insidious film. We love being here and are grateful for the support we’ve received from the local film community.”
VICSCREEN strategy has so far created more than 46,000 local jobs, supported 17,000 businesses and generated $1.7 billion in direct economic expenditure. Insidious 6 was secured for Victoria through the Victorian Screen Rebate, with additional support from the Federal Government’s Location Offset.
