Senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price addressed a capacity crowd at the Indian Society of WA’s Community Centre in Willetton on 11 September, using the event hosted by Liberals WA to reset her relationship with Indian Australians.
“What a night at the Indian Society of WA’s wonderful Indian Community Centre in Willetton, in Perth’s southern suburbs,” she wrote. “I was honoured to be a guest of @LiberalsWA and greatly appreciated the capacity crowd who came along – listening, engaging, and taking part in a frank and fearless Q&A.”
The Senator said she was struck by the strength of the community leaders she met on the night. “I was also fortunate to meet several community leaders, whose passion and commitment reflect the immense contribution that Australians of Indian heritage and their community make to Western Australia. It is community spirit like this that keeps our democracy strong.”
Price also thanked Liberal colleagues who joined her for the evening. “A special thank you to Michelle Hofmann and Senator Matt O’Sullivan for hosting, and to Hon Nick Goiran MLC for joining me in the Q&A.”
Her appearance in Perth comes at a delicate political moment. The controversy surrounding her remarks on migration has dominated the national conversation, fuelling tensions within the Liberal Party and prompting debate about how political leaders address Australia’s changing demographics. For Price, the Willetton event was an opportunity to underline her message that while she has concerns about migration policy, she does not question the place of the Indian community in Australian life.
The evening also highlighted the balancing act facing opposition figures. The Indian diaspora is one of the country’s fastest-growing communities and carries electoral weight in both state and federal contests. Engaging directly with community members, as Price did in Perth, is likely to be a recurring theme as parties attempt to rebuild trust and prevent political fallout from recent divisions.
