Victorian Minister for Multicultural Affairs Ingrid Stitt has issued a clear message ahead of the anti-immigration rallies planned across the country on 31 August, saying the state will always stand with multicultural communities.

“We stand with all Victorians—especially those from multicultural communities—who are concerned about the rallies planned across Australia on Sunday and the motivations of the people who organised them,” Stitt said.

Her remarks came amid warnings from police and community groups about the potential for unrest. Flyers for the rallies have promoted them as campaigns against mass immigration, but concerns have been raised about extremist elements using the protests to spread division.

Stitt said the rallies did not reflect Victoria’s values. “Our message is clear: Whoever you are, whoever you love, whoever you pray to—you are welcome here in Victoria. You deserve peace, safety and respect,” she said.

She emphasised that generations of migrants have shaped Victoria’s story. “Generations of migrant families have helped build Victoria—contributing to our economy, enriching our culture and strengthening the communities we share,” she said.

From small businesses to cultural festivals, places of worship to sporting clubs, Stitt said multicultural communities remain central to what defines the state. “Our multicultural communities represent the very best of our state’s values,” she said.

The minister closed with a firm rejection of those promoting hate. “Victorians completely reject racism and hate. Those who preach it will never win. Because our multiculturalism is one of the most precious parts of our state. It’s what makes us Victorian.”

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers

We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.

If you value thoughtful reporting that reflects Australia’s diversity, we invite you to contribute. Every donation helps us maintain the quality and consistency of our work.

Please consider making a contribution today.

Thank you for your support.
