For six couples, their wedding day was more than special—it was glowing. Literally. The NSW Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages teamed up with Vivid Sydney for the first time, offering after-hours ceremonies under the festival’s famous light displays.
On the evenings of 6 and 7 June, the usually formal setting of the Pyrmont Registry transformed into something out of a dream—fitting, given that the 2025 Vivid Sydney theme is just that. Against the backdrop of artful light installations and sweeping views of Sydney Harbour, six couples said “I do” in ceremonies that blended romance with spectacle.
The collaboration marks a new direction for the Registry, tapping into the popularity of public festivals to reimagine what a wedding can look like. It also reflects a broader shift in how Australians are choosing to tie the knot: simpler, more affordable, and increasingly set in places that carry cultural energy rather than traditional grandeur.
Registrar Theresa Fairman summed it up with a line tailor-made for wedding hashtags: “‘Watt’ a truly unforgettable way to celebrate love.”
The Pyrmont Registry itself is becoming something of a star. Since its February 2024 launch, the venue has hosted nearly 4,000 weddings. In 2024 alone, Registry weddings across NSW jumped by over 30 per cent—up from 2,500 in 2023 to 3,306 this year.
Accessibility seems to be a key driver. Set on Pirrama Road with uninterrupted views of the water, the location offers couples a blend of convenience and character. It’s styled with contemporary design, offers optional extras like flowers and photography, and is proving attractive for those who want a memorable setting without the ceremony becoming a financial burden.
This year’s Vivid Sydney runs until 14 June, with installations dotted across the city. The Registry event joined a lineup of music, art and light designed to entice both Sydneysiders and tourists. But for the newlyweds who took part, the festival offered more than entertainment—it became the beginning of a shared story.
Theresa Fairman added, “There was so much excitement for our newlyweds to light up our beautiful city and we hope the event marked the first step to a bright and happy marriage.”
Whether the Registry-Vivid experiment becomes a fixture on the calendar is yet to be seen. But it’s clear the appetite is there. Love, after all, tends to thrive where there’s light.
