The Indian community in Melbourne marked International Nurses Day with an event that brought together students, healthcare professionals, and dignitaries to celebrate the work of nurses, particularly those of Indian origin. Held at the Institute of Health and Nursing Australia (IHNA), the gathering welcomed Consul General Dr Sushil Kumar, who commended the enduring role nurses play in Australia’s healthcare system.
Dr Kumar, who has been serving as the Consul General of India in Melbourne since July 2022, spoke to the group about the critical value of compassion and skill in healthcare. He paid tribute to the Indian diaspora working across hospitals, clinics, and aged care facilities, calling their contributions “a source of pride and connection between the two countries.”
The International Nurses Day celebration, held annually on 12 May to coincide with the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, aims to recognise the dedication of nursing professionals globally. This year’s observance comes at a time when nurses continue to face mounting pressures—from aged care demands to workforce shortages. The Australian College of Nursing and the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia have both acknowledged the growing complexity of the sector, which makes such community-driven appreciation even more meaningful.

IHNA’s leadership spoke of their ongoing mission to educate the next generation of healthcare professionals, many of whom are international students. A strong portion of those in attendance were current students pursuing diplomas and degrees in nursing and health support services. For many, the event was both a morale boost and a public recognition of their career path.
Students mingled with local educators and faculty, sharing stories of work placements and future aspirations. Among them were several Indian-born students who said the event was a rare moment where their cultural heritage and career ambitions felt fully acknowledged.
Dr Kumar’s presence reflected a broader effort by the Indian diplomatic mission to remain actively engaged with community life in Victoria. Since taking office, he has made regular appearances at public events ranging from cultural festivals to education initiatives, often highlighting the economic and social links that bind India and Australia.
The event also saw nurses and students express hope for better pathways to permanent residency and professional growth. Many said they were encouraged by the government’s recent moves to prioritise healthcare workers in immigration settings, but added that support on the ground—from employment access to housing stability—remains a pressing issue.
