Residents of Tarneit, one of Victoria’s fastest-growing suburbs, are calling on the state government to fund, plan, and construct a public hospital to meet the healthcare needs of their expanding community. A petition initiated by local resident Aijaz Moinuddin highlights the challenges faced by the community due to the lack of nearby medical facilities.

Tarneit’s population has seen a remarkable increase, growing from 34,562 in 2016 to 56,383 in 2021, an approximate 63% rise in just five years. Projections suggest that by 2040, the population will reach nearly 130,000. Despite this surge, the suburb lacks a dedicated public hospital, forcing residents to rely on the already overwhelmed Werribee Mercy Hospital.

The petition highlights the strain on existing healthcare services, with residents experiencing long travel times for urgent medical care and extended emergency wait periods. It calls for the government to allocate funding in the upcoming State Budget, expedite planning and approvals, and engage with the local community to determine the necessary healthcare services and facilities.

This initiative follows other community-driven efforts in Tarneit. In May 2024, residents presented a petition to Wyndham Council and Victoria Police demanding enhanced safety and security measures in the suburb. Additionally, in October 2024, a petition was tabled in the Legislative Council addressing the critical issue of inadequate public transport services in Tarneit.

The push for a local hospital reflects the community’s proactive stance in advocating for essential infrastructure to support its burgeoning population. As Tarneit’s growth continues, residents remain hopeful that their collective voice will prompt timely government action to enhance local healthcare services.

If you believe Tarneit deserves better healthcare, sign the petition now and help bring a public hospital to Tarneit.
