$400 school bonus: Deadline nears as winter approaches

With an investment of $152.3 million, all payments will be increased to $400 from Term 1, 2026 – making sure every student gets the chance to join camps, attend excursions and play on a team with their mates

Hundreds of thousands of Victorian families have pocketed more than $150 million in savings thanks to the Allan Government’s School Saving Bonus—but with winter fast approaching, the clock’s ticking for those yet to use it.

The $400 School Saving Bonus, introduced late last year, was designed to take pressure off family budgets. And it’s done just that—with over 700,000 transactions already processed. Parents have spent more than $60 million on school uniforms, $58 million on camps and excursions, and $31.8 million on textbooks.

Premier Jacinta Allan and Deputy Premier Ben Carroll stopped by Pascoe Vale South Primary School to remind families that this isn’t just a summer special—the bonus can cover winter gear too. Whether it’s thick jumpers, trackpants, or jackets, the cash is ready to be spent before the chill sets in.

“Whether it’s helping buy new uniforms or textbooks or reducing the cost of school camp – our School Saving Bonus is making a real difference for families,” Allan said, adding that the savings were real and already easing the burden for many.

Despite the uptake, around 30 per cent of the bonuses remain untouched. And come 30 June, any unused funds will automatically shift to a family’s school account. From there, they can still be put to good use—covering things like sports, camps or excursions—but families have more choice if they act now.

Ben Carroll’s message was clear: “Now is the time for families to use the School Saving Bonus on winter uniforms before the cold weather sets in. This extra help means busy families have one less thing to worry about.”

Families can use the bonus at approved suppliers or even second-hand uniform shops run by schools. For non-government school families holding a healthcare or concession card, the offer stands too—with schools themselves managing how the funds are distributed.

Local MP Anthony Cianflone chimed in with a local stat: “It is wonderful to see that Pascoe Vale South Primary School families have already saved over $117,000 from the School Saving Bonus.”

The bonus sits alongside other education cost relief efforts—like free dental check-ups, the Glasses for Kids program, and school Breakfast Clubs, which have handed out more than 53 million meals since 2016.

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers

We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.

If you value thoughtful reporting that reflects Australia’s diversity, we invite you to contribute. Every donation helps us maintain the quality and consistency of our work.

Please consider making a contribution today.

Thank you for your support.
