The Victorian Government has launched a new initiative to help households transition from gas to electric appliances, promising long-term savings on energy bills. The Community Electrification Engagement Program, now open for applications, offers grants to community groups to support families in making the switch.
Energy Minister Lily D’Ambrosio announced that eligible organisations can apply for up to $110,000 to assist local residents in understanding the process, navigating available rebates, and connecting with suppliers. The initiative is positioned as a way to break down barriers for households considering the move to electric-powered homes.
Supporters argue that electrification can bring financial relief, particularly for homes with solar panels. Estimates suggest that switching from gas to electricity could save households around $2,000 annually, with potential savings rising to over $2,700 when combined with rooftop solar. Programs like Solar Homes offer further incentives, including a $1,400 rebate for solar panels, an interest-free loan of the same amount, and up to $1,000 off hot water system upgrades—reducing upfront costs by as much as $3,800.
Critics, however, note that while the shift to electric appliances may provide long-term savings, the initial cost of conversion can be substantial. Households without existing solar infrastructure could face higher upfront expenses, despite available rebates.
The Victorian Energy Upgrades initiative, which has already saved households $440 million through discounts on energy-efficient appliances, is expected to complement these efforts.
The program is part of the broader $3.73 million Community Power Hubs initiative and the Community Climate Change and Energy Action Program, which has facilitated energy-efficient upgrades at 169 community facilities.
Community organisations, charities, and not-for-profits are eligible to apply for funding until 14 April. The success of the initiative will depend on uptake and whether families see the transition as a viable, cost-effective option in the current economic climate.
