Labour Day Monday saw the Melbourne Konkan Community (MKC) up bright and early at Webster St Reserve, Point Cook, for a day packed with sport, food, and friendly competition. The Annual Sports Day kicked off at 8 AM, with Mangaloreans from across Melbourne arriving, eager to get into the action.

No MKC event is complete without a feast, and this was no exception. The morning began with steaming idlis, rich sambar, and sweet sheera, setting the tone for a high-energy day. By 8:45 AM, the games were underway, with teams battling it out in cricket and throwball while the crowd cheered them on.

As the day heated up, so did the appetites. A fragrant biryani feast arrived just in time for lunch, bringing a moment of calm amid the competition. Laughter and stories were shared over plates piled high, but the break was short-lived—the games rolled on, testing endurance and teamwork.

The biggest surprise of the day came in the form of a sweet reward. Just as the sun hit its peak, an ice cream treat made its way to the crowd, offering the perfect cooldown after hours of play.

This year’s event saw plenty of new faces, particularly among the younger crowd. First-timers jumped in with enthusiasm, adding fresh energy to the games and reinforcing the spirit of togetherness that defines MKC. Their participation was met with applause, and with any luck, they’ll be back for more in the future.

The day would not have been possible without the backing of Wyndham Council and the generosity of sponsors who continue to support the MKC’s community-driven events. And, of course, a huge round of applause goes to the participants—young and old—who made the day one to remember.

With friendships strengthened, memories made, and plenty of sporting glory, the MKC Sports Day once again proved that a little friendly competition, great food, and a shared love for community can make for an unforgettable celebration.
