Mira D’Silva, an entrepreneur and community advocate, has been named the Liberal Party’s candidate for the federal seat of Lalor. With a career spanning business, technology, and leadership, she brings a mix of private sector experience and grassroots engagement to the campaign.
Moving to Melbourne in 2004, D’Silva built her life in the city’s west, co-founding a technology firm that has grown into a key employer in the area. Alongside her business pursuits, she has been active in community leadership, mentoring women and migrants through roles with the Australian Computer Society and the Victorian Multicultural Committee.
“I want to bring real solutions to the challenges our local community faces,” D’Silva said. “Cost-of-living pressures, local infrastructure, and community safety are priorities that need focused action. With my background in business, I understand the importance of tackling inflation and supporting local businesses so families can get ahead.”
Her entry into the race has been welcomed by Liberal Senator Sarah Henderson, who described her as a candidate with the experience and determination to deliver for Lalor.
“Mira D’Silva has the leadership and vision to make a real difference. Her track record speaks for itself,” Henderson said.
D’Silva’s campaign aligns with the Liberal Party’s broader push to ease financial pressures and strengthen economic growth. Her business background and advocacy work place her in a position to appeal to both local entrepreneurs and working families looking for stability.
Lalor is a diverse and rapidly growing electorate in Melbourne’s west, with a young population and a high proportion of families. Nine percent of its residents are under four years old, the highest proportion in the country, while only seven percent are aged 65 and over. Nearly half of its households are in the process of purchasing their homes, reflecting a strong aspiration for home ownership.
The electorate is also culturally rich, with only 47 percent of residents born in Australia. Significant communities from India, Italy, and Macedonia contribute to its multicultural identity, with languages such as Arabic, Macedonian, Vietnamese, Italian, and Greek commonly spoken. Religious diversity is also a feature, with Catholicism, Islam, and Eastern Orthodox Christianity among the dominant faiths.
Despite its strengths, Lalor faces pressing challenges. Housing affordability, homelessness, mental health issues, and financial hardship are growing concerns. The region’s rapid expansion has placed strain on infrastructure and essential services, making investment in local roads, schools, and healthcare a key issue for residents.
As the election campaign gains momentum, all eyes will be on how D’Silva’s business acumen and community ties translate into voter support.
