Strengthening Strategic Partnerships: India's Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan meets Australian High Commissioner Philip Green in New Delhi, ahead of his visit to Australia in March 2025. Discussions focused on enhancing defence cooperation and ensuring regional stability in the Indo-Pacific

Australia and India continue to solidify their defence partnership, as evidenced by a recent meeting between General Anil Chauhan, India’s Chief of Defence Staff, and Philip Green, the Australian High Commissioner to India. This engagement highlights the mutual commitment to enhancing bilateral cooperation and ensuring stability in the Indo-Pacific region.

The discussions between General Chauhan and High Commissioner Green focused on advancing the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two nations. Both sides emphasised the importance of collaborative efforts to address regional security challenges, reflecting a shared dedication to maintaining peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific.

Historically, India and Australia have enjoyed a robust defence relationship. Initiatives such as the AUSINDEX naval exercises and the Malabar exercises, which now include Australia alongside India, Japan, and the United States, highlight the depth of this collaboration. These joint exercises enhance interoperability and demonstrate a unified approach to regional security concerns.

In recent years, both countries have taken significant steps to strengthen their defence ties. The signing of the Mutual Logistics Support Agreement in 2020 allows reciprocal access to each other’s military bases for refuelling and maintenance, facilitating more seamless joint operations. This agreement exemplifies the practical measures undertaken to bolster defence cooperation.

The strategic significance of the Indo-Pacific has further propelled Australia and India to collaborate closely within multilateral frameworks. Both nations are active members of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad), alongside Japan and the United States. The Quad focuses on promoting a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific, addressing challenges such as maritime security, infrastructure development, and humanitarian assistance.

The recent meeting between General Chauhan and High Commissioner Green also aligns with broader regional efforts to enhance security cooperation. The Quad nations have been expanding joint security initiatives in Asia’s maritime domains, reflecting a collective resolve to uphold international law and ensure freedom of navigation in the region.
