Consul General Amarjeet Singh Takhi joined by Prof Jacqueline Lo and Prof Rajeev Varshney at Murdoch University, ahead of NIFFA celebrations later this month

In a recent meeting, Consul General Amarjeet Singh Takhi welcomed Professor Jacqueline Lo, Director of the Indo-Pacific Research Centre (IPRC) at Murdoch University, along with Professor Rajeev Varshney. The discussion centred on the upcoming Northern India Film Festival Australia (NIFFA), which Murdoch University is set to host later this month.

The IPRC, established in 2022, serves as a university-wide platform dedicated to research and collaboration within the Indo-Pacific region. Its mission is to address critical challenges such as socio-economic development, human security, and geo-strategic governance. By fostering partnerships and driving translational research initiatives, the Centre aims to deepen Australia’s engagement with its regional neighbours.

Professor Lo, who leads the IPRC, has been instrumental in steering the Centre’s focus towards pressing issues affecting the Indo-Pacific. Under her leadership, the Centre has undertaken various projects that analyse the multifaceted challenges arising from environmental, political, cultural, social, and economic transformations in the region.

The forthcoming NIFFA event at Murdoch University exemplifies the Centre’s commitment to cultural engagement and regional collaboration. By hosting this festival, the University not only showcases Northern Indian cinema but also fosters cross-cultural dialogue and understanding. Such events are pivotal in bridging cultural divides and promoting mutual appreciation among diverse communities.Consul General Takhi’s meeting with Professors Lo and Varshney underscores the importance of diplomatic engagement in academic and cultural initiatives. Such collaborations enhance the exchange of ideas and resources, contributing to the broader goal of regional stability and prosperity.

Murdoch University’s proactive approach in hosting NIFFA and supporting the IPRC’s endeavours highlights its dedication to addressing the complexities of the Indo-Pacific region. Through research, cultural events, and international partnerships, the University continues to play a vital role in shaping a more connected and resilient regional community.

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers

We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.

If you value thoughtful reporting that reflects Australia’s diversity, we invite you to contribute. Every donation helps us maintain the quality and consistency of our work.

Please consider making a contribution today.

Thank you for your support.
