A perfect mix of fishing, music and fresh seafood awaits visitors at the Hooked on Lakes event on Sunday, 9 March. Held at the Lakes Entrance Foreshore Reserve, the free event promises a full day of activities, from kids’ fishing clinics to live music, cooking demonstrations and a swap meet for fishing and outdoor gear.
Victorian Fisheries Authority CEO Travis Dowling said the 2024 edition would bring an even livelier atmosphere, with an expanded music lineup, hands-on activities and a focus on local seafood.
“Lakes Entrance is a paradise for fishing and boating, and Hooked on Lakes is the perfect excuse to plan a trip with the family,” Mr Dowling said. “Young anglers can learn the ropes at kids’ clinics, seafood lovers can enjoy fresh Victorian produce, and there’s plenty of action throughout the day, from fishing education to live performances. The Pierce Brothers will keep the energy high into the evening.”
The event will run from 10am to 4pm, with food, drinks and music extending until 8pm. Fishing enthusiasts can also explore commercial fishing through guided tours at the historic Lakes Entrance Fishermen’s Co-Op (LEFCOL). Visitors can hop on a shuttle bus to access the co-op, where they’ll see fish filleting demonstrations, sample seafood and buy fresh catches straight from the Bullock Island facility. Off The Wharf café will add to the excitement with a seafood feast on Saturday night.

The weekend festival will feature a variety of experiences, including stalls selling fresh local fish and prawns, expert fishing talks from VFA Ambassador Lee Rayner, and hands-on dissections for those curious about marine life. The Women in Recreational Fishing and Boating Network will be on hand with tips for those looking to get involved, while Fishcare will run free ‘Come and Try’ sessions for beginners.
Children can enjoy casting clinics and creative activities led by Fisheries’ education team, while families can settle in for a picnic with a view of the water.
Backed by the East Gippsland Shire Council and Emergency Recovery Victoria’s Local Government Bushfire Recovery Funding, Hooked on Lakes offers a chance to enjoy the best of Victoria’s coastal lifestyle—whether that means casting a line, enjoying fresh seafood or simply soaking in the vibrant atmosphere.

Dear Reader,The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.
We operate independently.
