Australia’s Foreign Minister Penny Wong, speaking to The Today Show, has made it clear that navigating the Trump administration’s tariff policies requires confidence, persistence, and a firm grip on the facts. Speaking after discussions with US Secretary Marco Rubio, she pointed out that Australia already offers a tariff-free environment for American goods under the existing Free Trade Agreement.

“One of the great benefits of being at the inauguration of President Trump… was the opportunity to speak from day one with members of the Trump Administration,” she said. Wong highlighted that the US enjoys a trade surplus with Australia—two to one in America’s favour—while Australia imposes no barriers on American imports.

She acknowledged the broader market implications of US tariff decisions but stressed that none of this was unexpected. “This is consistent with what President Trump said he would do. He was very clear during the election campaign about his agenda. He is going to do things differently. We should expect that.”

Asked whether she secured any binding commitments from Rubio, Wong remained measured. “People were certainly receptive to the facts and figures that I put to them. I’ll say no more than that.”

She maintained that Australia will continue to push its case, making sure that decision-makers in Washington understand the benefits of the alliance and economic ties. “It’s important we continue to engage and continue to press Australia’s interests. And that’s what we’ll keep doing.”

While the conversation left room for interpretation, Wong’s approach signals a steady course: work the channels, present the numbers, and keep pressing. Whether that results in an ironclad commitment is another question.
