North Queensland is under a severe weather warning as the Bureau of Meteorology predicts isolated heavy rainfall across the region, particularly in Townsville and surrounding areas. The wet weather is expected to intensify over the weekend, prompting authorities to urge residents to prepare.
Locals are being advised to secure emergency kits, ensure they have enough food, water and medication for at least three days, and make contingency plans for vulnerable family members and pets. Power banks, torches, and fully charged phones are recommended in case of outages. Driving through floodwaters remains off-limits, with emergency services reinforcing the message: if it’s flooded, forget it.
For those in flood-prone areas, sandbags are available at multiple locations across Townsville, including Lou Litster Park, the SES Depot on Magnetic Island, and the Bluewater Community Centre. A full list of collection points can be found on the Townsville Emergency Management and Disaster Dashboard.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed through local radio, emergency services updates and official online channels. The community’s resilience is well known, but preparation remains key. With storm warnings in place, caution and planning will be crucial over the coming days.
