Liverpool City Council is urging residents to get involved in local life, with a renewed push to grow its volunteer workforce across a range of community services.
Mayor Ned Mannoun says the council’s volunteers are central to the city’s civic life, describing them as a driving force behind many of its most visible activities.
“Volunteering keeps you active, connected and part of something bigger,” Mayor Mannoun said.
“It’s a chance to contribute to your community, stay involved, and use your skills to help others.”
The council is seeking volunteers for roles in Bushcare, Libraries, Museums and Galleries, and Events. Positions are open to students, retirees, new migrants and anyone interested in contributing time and skills to the local area.
“Whether you’re studying, winding down from full-time work, or new to Liverpool, volunteering is a great way to get occupied, meet people and feel at home,” Mayor Mannoun said.
“There’s a role for everyone.”
He pointed to the varied benefits of participation, noting that “University students can gain valuable real-world experience, retirees can contribute their wealth of knowledge, and new migrants are encouraged to participate as a way to build confidence and form meaningful community connections.”
Council officials say volunteers play a practical role in delivering programmes and supporting events that draw residents together. According to the Mayor, “Some of our biggest and most successful events are powered by volunteers.”
“They’re the reason our community comes together—and they make it happen.”
The appeal comes as councils across New South Wales continue to rely on local participation to support environmental projects, cultural institutions and community gatherings. Bushcare volunteers, for example, assist with maintaining green spaces and protecting native habitats, while volunteers in libraries and museums help staff public programmes and support visitors.
Mayor Mannoun stressed that participation does not require a major time commitment. “You don’t need to give up huge amounts of time,” he said.
“Just bring your passion, your energy and your willingness to help.”
Council is encouraging residents to consider how their interests or experience might align with available roles. The message is straightforward: community life works best when people take part in it.
