An unexpected guest: A peacock strolls through the High Commission’s Australia Day celebrations in Delhi, effortlessly stealing the spotlight

Australia Day 2025 at the High Commission in Delhi had all the usual ingredients—familiar songs, beloved snacks, and a guest list filled with Australians and Indians. But nothing quite captured the attention of attendees like an uninvited visitor: a resident peacock strutting through the celebrations, stealing the spotlight without even trying.

The unexpected arrival of the peacock brought an extra layer of charm to an event already brimming with national pride. While officials and guests marked the occasion with music and conversation, the bird made itself right at home, an unplanned but oddly fitting symbol of Australia’s vibrant environment.

The celebration at the High Commission mirrored gatherings across the country. More than 20,000 new citizens from over 150 nations pledged their allegiance in citizenship ceremonies, a defining feature of the day’s observances. In Canberra, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese attended the National Citizenship and Flag Raising Ceremony, reinforcing the themes of unity and belonging.

While debates around the meaning and timing of Australia Day continue, the High Commission’s event offered a space for shared experience. The blend of local music, classic Aussie bites, and a peacock cameo gave attendees something to talk about long after the day’s official proceedings ended.

Sometimes, the best moments aren’t planned. A peacock turning up to an Australia Day gathering wasn’t on the agenda, but in its own way, it was a perfect fit—nature and culture colliding in an effortless, unforgettable way.
