Drumming up the vibes at Parramatta’s Australia Day celebrations last year

Australia Day in Parramatta promises to soar to new heights with a weekend of vibrant festivities. More than 350 lucky locals will greet the morning from the skies as part of the city’s iconic hot air balloon celebration, with a jam-packed schedule of family-friendly activities planned for the long weekend.

The festivities begin on Saturday, 25 January, at Parramatta Park, with the much-anticipated Balloon Glow. Starting from 4 pm, visitors can enjoy live music, roving performers, amusement rides, and an array of food trucks. As the night unfolds, hot air balloons will light up the sky in a dazzling display at 8 pm.

For early risers, Sunday morning offers the annual Australia Day Balloon Breakfast. Beginning at 6 am, the event will feature 10 hot air balloons taking flight at sunrise. A few fortunate attendees, chosen via a ticket ballot, will enjoy a tethered balloon ride for a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

On the ground, there’s plenty to keep everyone entertained. From live music and performances to amusement rides and a classic BBQ breakfast, the event promises something for all ages.

Lord Mayor Cr Martin Zaiter highlighted the importance of the weekend’s celebrations for the community. “Australia Day is a time for us to come together and reflect on what unites us. Our hot air balloon spectacular is a unique way to mark this day in Parramatta, and I look forward to seeing locals enjoy the magic of sunrise, whether from the park or above the treetops.”

The weekend will also include the City of Parramatta’s 2025 Citizen of the Year Awards and a Citizenship Ceremony. Fifty new citizens will be officially welcomed to the community, underscoring the city’s commitment to celebrating its cultural diversity.

Cr Zaiter expressed pride in Parramatta’s inclusive spirit. “We’re proud of our diverse culture and history, and it’s always special to welcome new members to our community.”

Parramatta’s Australia Day festivities invite everyone to come together, celebrate, and create unforgettable memories. Whether enjoying a balloon ride, the glow of the night sky, or a hearty breakfast with friends and family, the event is set to make the weekend truly memorable.

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers

We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.

If you value thoughtful reporting that reflects Australia’s diversity, we invite you to contribute. Every donation helps us maintain the quality and consistency of our work.

Please consider making a contribution today.

Thank you for your support.
