Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar has been honoured with an honorary membership by the Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC), recognising his exceptional contributions to the sport. The MCC, Australia’s oldest sporting institution established in 1838, announced this accolade on December 27, 2024, via their official social media channels, referring to Tendulkar as an “icon” of cricket.

Tendulkar’s cricketing career is distinguished by remarkable achievements. Over 24 years, he represented India in 200 Tests, 463 One Day Internationals (ODIs), and a solitary Twenty20 International, amassing over 34,000 runs. He holds the records for the highest number of runs in both Test and ODI formats.

The Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) holds a special place in Tendulkar’s career. In five Test matches at this iconic venue, he scored 449 runs, including a century and three half-centuries, making him India’s top Test run-scorer at the MCG. Additionally, in seven ODIs at the ground, he accumulated 190 runs.

Tendulkar’s association with cricket clubs extends beyond Melbourne. In 2010, he was awarded honorary life membership by the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) in London, joining fellow Indian cricketing icons such as Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly.

The Melbourne Cricket Club’s decision to honour Tendulkar underscores his global impact on the sport and his special connection with Australian cricket. His performances on Australian soil, particularly at the MCG, have left an indelible mark on cricket enthusiasts worldwide.

This honorary membership not only celebrates Tendulkar’s past achievements but also symbolises the enduring bond between Indian and Australian cricket. As the MCC continues to honour individuals who have significantly contributed to the game, Tendulkar’s inclusion serves as an inspiration for future generations of cricketers.

In reflecting on this honour, cricket fans and analysts alike acknowledge Tendulkar’s unparalleled skill, dedication, and sportsmanship. His legacy continues to influence the sport, fostering a spirit of excellence and mutual respect among cricketing nations.

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers

We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.

If you value thoughtful reporting that reflects Australia’s diversity, we invite you to contribute. Every donation helps us maintain the quality and consistency of our work.

Please consider making a contribution today.
