Dr. Shashi Tharoor, MP for Thiruvananthapuram and renowned orator, captivated a Melbourne audience this week, sparking a dynamic conversation on the pressing issues shaping our world. Hosted by the Australia India Institute, Tharoor joined Lisa Singh, CEO of the Institute, at the University of Melbourne, diving into the shifts and turns of geopolitics in 2024.
In his typical eloquent style, Dr. Tharoor explored topics spanning from Indian state elections to the impact of Donald Trump’s re-election bid, highlighting these issues within the broader global landscape. He drew attention to the dual role of the United Nations as both a peacemaker and sometimes participant in global crises, and further underscored the invaluable contributions of the Indian diaspora in Australia, a key bridge strengthening bilateral ties between the two nations.
Known for his keen intellect, Dr. Tharoor’s commentary provided deep insights into current affairs, addressing each theme with a polished blend of wit and experience. With a career foundation built on nearly three decades at the United Nations, along with a notable run for Secretary-General in 2006, Tharoor’s international perspective resonated with a crowd eager for nuanced takes on today’s complexities.

Adding to the gravity of his address, Dr. Tharoor drew from his rich academic and literary background, including a PhD at just 22 from Tufts University and authorship of 24 books. Recognised as a ‘Global Leader of Tomorrow’ by the World Economic Forum, Tharoor’s presence added a distinct perspective on the interconnected future of Australia, India, and the world at large.
During his Melbourne visit, Dr. Tharoor also made time to connect with notable Indian Australians, adding a personal dimension to his trip. He met actor Pallavi Sharda, known for her pioneering work in diaspora cinema, and celebrated her contributions to reshaping narratives about the Indian diaspora. Sharda’s cinematic work has resonated with global audiences, showcasing diverse perspectives and new cultural dialogues.
In addition, Dr. Tharoor caught up with eminent neurosurgeon Dr. Girish Nair, accompanied by his wife Srividya. Dr. Nair, renowned for his groundbreaking achievement as the first doctor to inject stem cells into Parkinson’s patients, shared insights from his cutting-edge work. This moment marked a meeting of minds, with Dr. Tharoor and Dr. Nair reflecting on the advancements in healthcare that have global implications, touching on the shared pride in India’s contributions to international innovation.
