India’s External Affairs Minister, Dr. S. Jaishankar, has officially inaugurated the new Consulate General of India in Brisbane, marking a promising chapter for India’s engagement with Queensland. Expressing his enthusiasm, Dr. Jaishankar remarked, “Delighted to formally inaugurate new Consulate General of India in Brisbane today,” highlighting the step as a commitment to deeper ties with Australia’s sunshine state.

The new Consulate, set to serve the Indian diaspora and strengthen economic, trade, and educational bonds, reflects India’s proactive approach to diplomatic outreach in Queensland. Dr. Jaishankar emphasised the role the Consulate will play in “promoting trade, fostering educational linkages and serving the diaspora,” which underscores the Indian government’s intent to create strong and tangible connections within the state. This new presence is expected to bridge both cultural and economic channels, bringing benefits to both Indian and Australian communities.

During his visit, Dr. Jaishankar met with Queensland Governor Dr. Jeannette Young to discuss ways of advancing trade, investment, and cooperation between India and Queensland. His visit was also attended by key figures, including Queensland’s Ros Bates MP and Fiona Simpson MP, symbolising the collaborative spirit of this partnership.

Taking a moment for personal reflection, Dr. Jaishankar also paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Brisbane’s Roma Street Parklands. At the Gandhi statue, he commemorated the Indian leader’s legacy, observing, “His message of peace and harmony resonates through the world.” This homage underscored the values that continue to guide India’s global outreach—principles of peace, unity, and cooperation that echo Gandhi’s ideals.

With its new diplomatic base in Queensland, India stands poised to enhance its engagement with the state across multiple sectors, enriching the lives of the growing Indian community in Australia and boosting mutual opportunities for progress.

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers

We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.

If you value thoughtful reporting that reflects Australia’s diversity, we invite you to contribute. Every donation helps us maintain the quality and consistency of our work.

Please consider making a contribution today.

Thank you for your support.
