‘This Girl Can Week’ invites women to get active, feel connected

This Girl Can Week is back, running from 10 to 17 November, inviting women across Victoria to take part in a range of free and low-cost activities aimed at bringing people together to get active. With activities as varied as cultural dance, basketball, stand-up paddleboarding, and even active playgroups, the week offers something for women of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities, making it easy to join in and feel included.

VicHealth’s Head of This Girl Can, Rebecca Ahern, emphasises this year’s theme, “Together We Are Unstoppable,” which celebrates the collective strength of women getting active together. “When women feel safe, supported, and welcome, they can find confidence in movement,” says Ahern. “This Girl Can Week 2024 is a celebration of joy, community, and connection, and it’s a chance for women to discover or rediscover activities they love in an environment that champions inclusivity.”

For many women, overcoming the fear of judgement and finding welcoming spaces to be active can be the biggest hurdles. This Girl Can Week is focused on reshaping what “getting active” means by creating safe, accessible, and beginner-friendly options that defy stereotypes about who should be active and how.

Whether a novice, returning after a break, or trying something completely new, there’s a place for everyone in This Girl Can Week. For details on events near you, head to thisgirlcan.com.au/events to join in on a week that promises connection, movement, and a whole lot of fun.

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers

We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.

If you value thoughtful reporting that reflects Australia’s diversity, we invite you to contribute. Every donation helps us maintain the quality and consistency of our work.

Please consider making a contribution today.

Thank you for your support.
