The Hobart Hurricanes have clinched the first-ever T20 Spring Challenge title in dramatic fashion, defeating Brisbane Heat by five wickets at Cricket Central, Sydney. A nail-biting finish saw the Hurricanes pull off a final-ball win, showcasing their resilience under pressure.

Lizelle Lee played a starring role for the Hurricanes, smashing 63 from 47 balls to steer the team’s pursuit of Brisbane Heat’s 9-133. Her aggressive innings gave the Hurricanes the early edge, but a flurry of wickets threatened to derail their chase.

As the tension mounted, it was down to Emma Manix-Geeves and Molly Strano to guide the Hurricanes to victory. Manix-Geeves remained calm with an unbeaten 28, while Strano supported with a vital 10 not out. Needing just four runs from the last over, the pair managed to keep their composure, securing a single off the final delivery to seal the win.

This inaugural T20 Spring Challenge has already made waves in the domestic cricket scene, giving players like Lee the chance to shine and enhancing the lead-up to the upcoming Weber WBBL|10. With more playing opportunities and higher wages for players, this competition has injected fresh energy into the Australian women’s cricket calendar.

Fans can now look forward to the milestone tenth season of the WBBL, kicking off with a triple-header on Sunday, 27 October. A rematch of last season’s final between Adelaide Strikers and Brisbane Heat will be one of the highlights at Adelaide Oval.

The Hurricanes’ triumph in this new competition sets the stage for an exciting summer of cricket, as they and the other teams gear up for WBBL|10. Tickets for all matches are available at www.bigbash.com.au.

Final Scorecard: Hobart Hurricanes 5-134 (20 ov, Lee 63, Manix-Geeves 28*) defeated Brisbane Heat 9-133 (Ginger 24, Johnston 4-20, Strano 3-31). Player of the Final: Lizelle Lee.
