hanghai and Perth are set to enjoy a lively exchange once again, as China Eastern Airlines prepares to reintroduce its special non-stop flights between the two cities, just in time for Chinese New Year 2025. This move, supported by the Cook Government in collaboration with Perth Airport, marks the second consecutive year these direct flights will operate, signalling a boost for Western Australia’s tourism and economy.

The flights are scheduled to run over a three-week period, from 24 January to 14 February 2025, with three services each week. This totals ten additional flights, bringing an extra 2,320 seats directly from Shanghai to Perth. These direct flights are expected to attract thousands of Chinese visitors to Western Australia, further enhancing the state’s position as a key destination for Chinese travellers during their most significant national holiday.

The reintroduction of these flights comes at a time when Western Australia is actively working to secure and re-establish direct international connections. Since borders reopened, the Cook Government has secured or re-launched non-stop flights to 20 international destinations, with the Shanghai-Perth route being a prominent addition to this growing network. The Cook Government’s focus on increasing direct flights is driven by the benefits these connections bring, from boosting tourism to creating jobs and strengthening the economy.

The significance of the Chinese market to Western Australia’s tourism sector cannot be overstated. China remains the state’s largest market by visitor spend, with 66,000 visitors from China contributing $303 million to Western Australia’s economy in the year ending March 2024. The reintroduction of these direct flights during the Chinese New Year period is expected to further solidify this relationship, providing an accessible and convenient option for Chinese travellers looking to explore Western Australia.

Premier Roger Cook emphasised the impact of last year’s direct Shanghai flights, which delivered a considerable boost to local tourism and the economy. The influx of visitors from these flights not only benefited local businesses but also contributed to a more diversified and resilient economy. Cook noted that the return of these flights for another season reflects the ongoing efforts to secure more direct connections to Western Australia, which are crucial for creating local jobs and supporting long-term economic growth.

Tourism Minister Rita Saffioti echoed these sentiments, highlighting the importance of the Chinese market to Western Australia’s tourism industry. As the top market for visitor spend, the return of the Shanghai-Perth direct flights during Chinese New Year 2025 is seen as a positive development for the state’s tourism sector. Saffioti also pointed out that the resumption of China Southern Airlines’ non-stop service between Guangzhou and Perth in November will further enhance Western Australia’s appeal to Chinese travellers, creating even more opportunities for economic growth.

These developments come at a critical time for the tourism industry, which has been gradually recovering from the impacts of the global pandemic. The resumption of direct flights from major Chinese cities is a welcome boost, as it not only facilitates easier access for Chinese tourists but also strengthens cultural and economic ties between Western Australia and China. The Cook Government’s proactive approach in securing these flights underscores its commitment to revitalising the tourism sector and ensuring Western Australia remains a top destination for international travellers.

The Chinese New Year is a time of celebration and travel for many in China, making it an ideal period for promoting tourism to Western Australia. The direct flights from Shanghai provide a seamless travel experience for Chinese visitors, allowing them to enjoy the festivities while exploring the diverse attractions that Western Australia has to offer. From the vibrant city life of Perth to the stunning natural landscapes, Chinese tourists will have the opportunity to experience the best of Western Australia during their visit.

Moreover, the timing of these flights aligns perfectly with the broader strategy to increase Chinese tourist numbers and spending in Western Australia. With the additional seats provided by China Eastern Airlines and the upcoming resumption of flights from Guangzhou, the state is well-positioned to capture a significant share of the Chinese outbound tourism market. The economic benefits of this strategy are expected to be substantial, with increased spending by Chinese tourists boosting local businesses, creating jobs, and supporting the broader economy.

The success of last year’s direct flights from Shanghai serves as a strong foundation for the continued growth of this route. The positive impact on tourism and the economy has been evident, and the return of these flights in 2025 is anticipated to bring even greater benefits. The Cook Government and Perth Airport’s collaboration with China Eastern Airlines has been instrumental in making this service possible, reflecting a shared commitment to enhancing Western Australia’s connectivity with key international markets.

As tickets for the special flights go on sale, there is already a sense of anticipation among those involved in the tourism industry. The expected influx of Chinese visitors during the Chinese New Year period is seen as a significant opportunity to showcase Western Australia’s unique attractions and hospitality. The return of these flights is more than just a logistical achievement; it represents a key moment in the ongoing efforts to strengthen ties between Western Australia and China, fostering mutual understanding and economic cooperation.

The success of these direct flights will likely pave the way for further initiatives to attract Chinese tourists to Western Australia. With the state’s natural beauty, vibrant cities, and rich cultural experiences, there is much to offer to international visitors. The reintroduction of the Shanghai-Perth route is a clear indication that Western Australia is ready to welcome the world back, with Chinese tourists playing a vital role in the state’s tourism revival.

As Western Australia continues to rebuild and expand its international connections, the return of these special non-stop flights from Shanghai is a positive sign of what lies ahead. The Cook Government’s focus on securing direct flights and promoting tourism is paying off, with tangible results already visible. The 2025 Chinese New Year period is set to be an exciting time for Western Australia, as the state once again opens its doors to thousands of Chinese visitors, eager to explore and enjoy everything it has to offer.
