Melbourne is set to celebrate International Delivery Rider Appreciation Day with a unique event that shines a spotlight on the city’s hardworking food delivery riders. Taking place on Sunday, 18 August, from 3 PM to 5 PM at the Gig Workers’ Hub on Elizabeth Street, the event marks the first-ever celebration of its kind in Melbourne.

Founded by HungryPanda in 2023, this day is dedicated to acknowledging the daily efforts of delivery riders who ensure that meals reach doorsteps on time, no matter the challenges they face. The event promises an afternoon filled with food, refreshments, and a chance for riders, restaurant partners, and the local community to come together.

Among the attendees will be Lord Mayor Nick Reece and representatives from the Melbourne Chinatown Association, who are lending their support to this important initiative. The presence of these prominent figures underscores the city’s commitment to fostering a safer and more supportive environment for those working within the gig economy.

Kitty Lu, Director of Public Affairs at HungryPanda, highlighted the significance of the event, stating, “We’re celebrating the delivery riders who consistently go the extra mile. This event is an opportunity for restaurant merchants to connect with the riders who keep their businesses running and for customers to show their appreciation.”

Amid ongoing discussions about industrial relations reforms, HungryPanda remains dedicated to championing the welfare of delivery riders. As part of this year’s celebration, the company has introduced a ‘Rider Station Map’ within its app. This new feature points riders to locations where they can rest and recharge, a testament to HungryPanda’s commitment to improving the working conditions of gig workers.

Furthermore, HungryPanda will officially launch 33 Rider Stations across Australia, with facilities available in major cities including Sydney, Adelaide, Perth, Canberra, and Melbourne. These stations are set to provide much-needed support for delivery riders, ensuring they have a place to take a break during their busy shifts.

For more details about the event and to learn more about HungryPanda’s initiatives, interested parties can visit the company’s website or connect via social media channels.
