On the 77th anniversary of the birth of modern India, Opposition Leader Peter Dutton extends heartfelt wishes on behalf of the Coalition to the people of India and Australians of Indian ancestry, celebrating Indian Independence Day.
“This day marks a significant moment in history when, at the stroke of midnight on 15 August 1947, the Indian Independence Act came into force, establishing a sovereign and democratic India,” Dutton stated.
Reflecting on India’s journey to independence, Dutton acknowledged the profound struggles, suffering, and sacrifices that paved the way. He quoted Mahatma Gandhi, who, just five years before independence, reminded the world, “Freedom is not for the coward or the faint-hearted.”
Dutton also highlighted Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s words on the eve of Independence, emphasising that freedom was “not one of ease or resting but of incessant striving.”
Dutton praised India’s achievements, noting, “With freedom and relentless effort, the people of India have built the world’s largest democracy, a nation recognized for its economic and social progress, and its unwavering commitment to peace and prosperity.”
The enduring friendship between Australia and India was also a key theme in Dutton’s message. He recalled the camaraderie forged during the ill-fated Dardanelles Campaign on Gallipoli in 1915, where Indian and Australian soldiers fought side by side.
“This bond has only grown stronger over the decades, with new connections in business, trade, and culture,” he remarked. “Today, 783,000 Australians proudly trace their ancestry to India, a testament to the deep ties between our nations.”
Dutton also highlighted the importance of the current cooperation between Australia and India, particularly in the realm of defense. “In these challenging times, with conflicts in Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and rising tensions in our own region, our defense cooperation is crucial in deterring aggression and maintaining stability,” he said.
“May we draw strength from the memories of those who fought for freedom, as we continue to work together to safeguard it.”
