Andrew Clarke, a long-time contributor to The Indian Sun, known for his insightful columns on sports and automobiles, has taken another bold step into the literary world with his latest release, The Immortals of Australian Football. Leveraging his deep connection with Australian sports, Clarke brings rich experience and a keen understanding of the game to this new book, which celebrates the greatest players from Australia’s beloved sport.

The book captures the essence of Australian football by honouring the game’s most iconic figures. Drawing on the popular “Immortals” concept, Clarke applies it to the Australian Football League (AFL), presenting a carefully selected list of players who have left an indelible mark on the sport. This includes early pioneers like Roy Cazaly, whose name is synonymous with the phrase “Up there, Cazaly,” a tribute to his incredible leaping ability. Clarke also pays homage to legendary figures such as Ron Barassi and Leigh Matthews, both of whom have shaped the game through their unmatched skill and leadership.

Modern-day heroes also feature prominently in the book. Lance Franklin, affectionately known as “Buddy,” is celebrated for his extraordinary goal-kicking prowess and his ability to turn a game on its head. Dustin Martin, another standout, is lauded not just for his on-field dominance but also for his significant impact on the game’s modern era. Clarke expertly narrates the remarkable stories of these athletes, providing readers with a deeper understanding of their contributions and what makes them immortal in the world of Australian football.

The Immortals of Australian Football is a tribute to the history, the passion, and the unique culture that defines Australian football. Clarke’s narrative style is engaging, making this book a must-read for anyone with a love for the game. Whether you’re a lifelong fan or new to the sport, Clarke’s work offers a compelling look at the legends who have shaped AFL into what it is today.

The book will be officially launched on Thursday, 22nd August, at Turf’s Sports Bar, located at 131 Queen St, Melbourne, VIC 3000. The event, which is free to attend, will kick off with arrivals at 6:00 PM, followed by an engaging conversation at 6:30 PM between Andrew Clarke and former Australian football player Matthew Lloyd. Clarke will also be available for a signing session, making it a perfect evening for football enthusiasts to celebrate the game’s rich history and its most iconic players.

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers

We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.

If you value thoughtful reporting that reflects Australia’s diversity, we invite you to contribute. Every donation helps us maintain the quality and consistency of our work.

Please consider making a contribution today.

Thank you for your support.
